China Telecom in touch with Apple on CDMA iPhone (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) – China Telecom Corp Ltd, the smallest of the country's threesome wireless carriers, has contacted Apple Inc to inform the favourite iPhone supported on CDMA (code sectionalization multiple access) technology, Chairman Wang Xiaochu said on Friday.

Larger competition China Unicom is the inner cause in China, which has 886 meg ambulatory phone users, to substance the iPhone so far. However, some analysts say China Telecom could be next after an inner commendation with Unicom expires this year.

"We're not denying that we're in contact with iPhone (Apple), but I cannot interpret on the progress," Wang told reporters after a shareholders' meeting.

Shareholders also approved an up to 90 1000000000 yuan ($14 billion) stick issue, including 60 1000000000 yuan foreign and the remainder domestically.

Some of the proceeds would be used to develop its CDMA network, executives said.

"From what we see now, we'll requirement money to take our parent's CDMA network. But another than that, we won't requirement to supply a Brobdingnagian amount of bonds," Wang said.

Wang also said China Telecom would study Hong Kong as a prototypal priority for supply foreign bonds, although it had no immediate organisation for a yuan stick in the Asiatic territory.

China Telecom, a qualifying newcomer to China's ambulatory market, operates the country's maximal fixed-line network and is aggressively promoting band over that channel.

China Telecom had 103.10 meg ambulatory phone users as of April, including 17.84 meg 3G subscribers.

China Telecom shares, which hit gained more than 10 proportionality this year, were up 1.8 proportionality in weekday afternoon trading, outperforming the Hang Seng Index's 0.06 proportionality gain.
