IBM to pay $10 million to settle Asian bribe case (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – IBM has agreed to clear $10 meg to settle charges it gave change and gifts to Chinese and South Asiatic polity officials, according to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Under the agreement, which is person to court approval, IBM does not admit or contain the allegations that it desecrated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
The agreement, a double of which was obtained by AFP on Friday, calls for the US computer giant to clear disgorgement of $5.3 million, welfare of $2.7 meg and a civil penalty of $2 million.
In a upset filed with a US District Court here, the SEC said employees of IBM subsidiaries and a majority-owned joint venture provided change and incorrect gifts, movement and entertainment to Chinese and South Asiatic polity officials between 1998 and 2009.
From 1998 to 2003, employees of IBM Korea and joint venture LG IBM PC Co. paying $207,000 in change bribes and gave incorrect gifts to South Asiatic polity officials to bonded the sale of IBM products, the upset said.
It said that from 2004 to 2009, employees of IBM China provided overseas trips, entertainment and incorrect gifts to Chinese polity officials.
"The move in China participating several key IBM China employees and more than 100 IBM China employees overall," the upset said.
IBM could not be reached for immediate interpret on the proposed settlement.
IBM shares were up 0.95 proportionality at $155.65 in primeval salutation trading on Wall Street.
